Undoing (2006)

Review
Chris Chan Lee's film noir Undoing, spotlighted rising star Sung Kang (Better Luck Tomorrow, The Motel) as an aimless young tough in way over his head against crooked cops and various mobsters. An atmospheric grafting of Hong Kong action stylistics onto the L.A. cityscape, the film benefits from its assured feel for the streets of Los Angeles, putting its Koreatown setting and Asian-American characters firmly within the traditions of both genres. --Jason Sanders, FilmMaker Magazine

Tekkon Kinkreet [Blu-ray

Tekkonkinkreet (2006) is a landmark in the increasing cross-pollination between Japanese and American animation: Based on a manga by Taiyo Matsumoto, the film was made in Japan at Studio 4C, but directed by American Michael Arrias. The story unfolds in Treasure Town, a scabrous metropolitan slum so gritty it makes the viewer want to clean under his fingernails. Orphans White and Black share an existence at the fringes of an already marginalized subculture. White seems naive, if not learning disabled: at 11, he can't tie his shoes or dress himself. But he has an uncanny sixth sense about what's happening in Treasure Town.

Older, streetwise Black looks after White and receives the emotional support he needs in return: They're two halves of a damaged whole. The arrival of a murderous yakuza boss who wants to demolish Treasure Town and build an amusement park draws Black and White into an escalating spiral of physical and emotional violence. Although the ending of Tekkonkinkreet feels needlessly obscure, it's a striking and often powerful film from a first-time director. (Rated R: violence, grotesque imagery, brief nudity, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

Product Description

From the creators of Animatrix comes this visually-stunning new anime film based on a popular Japanese manga written by Taiyo Matsumoto. In Treasure Town, where the moon smiles and young boys can fly, life can be both gentle and brutal. This is never truer than for our heroes, Black and White, two street urchins who watch over the city, doing battle with an array of old-world Yakuza and alien assassins vying to rule the decaying metropolis. Tekkon Kinkreet is a dynamic tale of brotherhood that addresses the faults of present day society, true love lost, and the kindness of the human heart.

A brutal elegy for our changing times as well as a tour-de-force of visual artistry, Tekkon Kinkreet is a deeply resonant story with a heart. The title Tekkon Kinkreet is a play on the Japanese words for ‘concrete,’ ‘iron,’ and ‘muscle,’ and it suggests the warring images of steel and concrete cities amassing against the powers of the imagination. Until now, at least in imports abroad, anime style has almost entirely been characterized by wide-eyed heroes, big robots, and uninspired plotting. Tekkon Kinkreet jettisons these stereotypes in favor of a more realistic, European ethos, successfully incorporating engaging child characters and a complex action plot into a poetic, engaging story.

Product Description

Jim is a young, closefisted Chinese American living in LA who desperately finds himself with a stack of disposable cameras, invitations, champagne bottles, and a ten-thousand dollar engagement ring bill. The only thing missing is a bride. In financial debt and miserable from having his fiancé leave two weeks prior to Valentine's day, Jim asks his best friend, a Japanese hitman, to kill him. With less than four days to live, Jim treks to the mountains to find his fate. Along the way, he encounters a pizza delivery boy with lucky charms, searches for the funeral spot of his choice and meets a girl.

Enjoyable Film With James Kyson Lee in the Lead,
James Kyson Lee proves he can carry a film as a leading man. Fortunately, he's also in good company with fellow actors to share the screen with, an amusing script that allows for physical comedy (mostly physical reactions) and a director who knows how to move the story along.

Jim Lee (JKL) was due to be married to the woman he loved, only she's run off with the Filipino DJ who was going to be performing at their reception. If you're not familiar with Chinese culture, it's like pouring salt onto an open wound. A friend takes him on trip to get away from it all and it's there he meets a wouldbe girlfriend. Unfortunately, Jim has also asked his friend (who happens to be an assassin) to murder him before Valentine's Day. With the date looming just ahead and the potential for love on the horizon, anything could happen.

The only complaint I had was the dramatic and somewhat violent final act that felt as if it came out of nowhere before settling back down. Fortunately, it doesn't last as long as it could have and doesn't take away from the film much.

All in all, very enjoyable, especially with Composer George Shaw's score complimenting it.

Beautiful Beast (1996)

Kaori Shimamura is the beautiful beast in this Japanese "breasts and bullets" thriller, playing a Chinese assassin in Japan assigned to take out a yakuza boss and his associates. Along the way she falls in love with the ex-yakuza barman who becomes her guardian angel, bonds with a young Chinese woman trapped in a life of sexual slavery, and finally tracks down the vicious thug who murdered her little sister. Like the Zero Woman films, Beautiful Beast is directed with a terse, tight, grimly serious style, and a soiled morality and doomed fate underlie the mix of slick violence, hot erotic interludes, and unsettling sadism. It's enough to lift the film above the morass of Japanese feral femme thrillers, if just barely. --Sean Axmaker

This is a great fight movie. it's nothing like the other "fight" dvd's out there that promise great fight action but come up far short of the goal. (Yeah, i'm looking at you, ModelFights) This is great, real action.

Best part about it is NO USELESS FILLER! No "redneck" hosts, (as in Brwalin' Broads) NO humorless comedy sketches (as in G.L.O.W., love the product, but hate the pointless comedy attempts) It does have a sometimes annoying "instant replay slow motion feature. (IT"S ON DVD!! WE CAN DO THE SLOW MOTIONT STUFF OURSELVES!)

but if you are looking for a good, solid video of women catfighting, really catfighting, this is a definite must.
